DOORS AT 8:30 | CONCERT AT 9:00
Raw Honey is the long-term recording project of Maggie Hopp. The project has passed through multiple casts of collaborators—and geographies—with two elements unchanged: Hopp’s psychically unearthing songs and the frequent contribution of Ypsilanti cult hero Fred Thomas. ‘Riverbed’, to be released on Thomas’ vinyl/tape label Life Like in 2021, is an uncompromisingly open album for an artist who already approaches songwriting with an unnerving directness. Excavating her traumatic upbringing, Hopp parses through the mess of her emotional history to create an oddly clear rumination that’s resolute and vulnerable, but above all—tender, much like the child holding a child on the album’s cover.
Singer/songwriter Fred Thomas has been using music as a form of exploration and self-discovery since the early ‘90s. Though he’s been involved in multiple bands and helped countless other artists record and release their creative work, Thomas’ songs are never more raw, immediate, or unguarded as they become in a solo setting.
Jonathan Edwards is a songwriter, guitarist and producer based in Ypsilanti. Formally a member of Detroit band The Silent Years and a founding member of Ann Arbor band Skeleton Birds, he has also worked on numerous collaborative projects with other Ann Arbor-based musicians across many genres. A new full-length album, titled Wild Ghosts, was completed this year and marks the first release under his name. Wild Ghosts features 13 intimate songs exploring loss, grief and self-sacrifice, with sparse arrangements distilling each down to the bare essentials. Edwards self-produced and recorded the album over the course of this last year, along with Jeremy Edwards who also mixed and mastered the record.
