Trumpeter Justin Walter partners up with vocalist Katie Smith to present an evening of traditional jazz and music from the early American songbook. An original and current member of Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings, Walter's indoctrination into the works of the great masters of jazz began over 20 years ago and has led to a rich participation in a variety of projects over the years. Most recently Walter's Hot Five performed at the Michigan Theater for the premier of Bix: 'Ain't none of them play like him', a documentary on the life of trumpet player and composer Bix Beiderbecke as well as a follow up tribute to Beiderbecke at the Blue Llama Jazz Club. The group will be joined by vocalist Katie Smith. Having recently returned to Michigan, Smith fronts her own group Cabaret Boreale, and performs regularly with Djangophonique, in addition to a variety of other projects around the area. Smith is both dynamic and precise, embodying the vibe of the era with a voice that at once feels effortlessly light, while at the same time grounded in a fullness and depth that combined, convey a sound rich with color and meaning. The group features long standing comrades Chris Tabacynski on reeds, Erik McIntyre on Guitar, and Shannon Wade on Bass.
