Schmaltz

  • North Star Lounge 301 N. Fifth Ave Ann Arbor United States (map)

Schmaltz, a modern klezmer band based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, gives Jewish traditional music a new flavor by fusing elements of jazz, balkan, funk, latin, and polka. The group is seen frequently as part of a monthly residency at the North Star Lounge in Ann Arbor, as well as at synagogues, bars, jazz clubs, and other music venues all across SE Michigan.

With roots deeply seeded at the University of Michigan, Schmaltz features U of M SMTD alumni Michael Gerace (Trombone), and Jacob Warren (Bass), as well as current SMTD protégé Christopher “Chips” Gerace (Trumpet). Rounding out the rhythm section are Ann Arbor native Jack Harris (Drums), and award winning pianist, arranger, and composer Seulah Noh. Brought together by SMTD alumnus, bandleader, and Ashkenazi food enthusiast Ryan Schildcrout (Saxophones), Schmaltz’s energetic horn-forward sound brings a refreshing uniqueness to the beloved traditions of klezmer.
